Shakespeare at the Green - 2006

Leah Webb and Matt Cosper, as Titania and Oberon, share a 'moment.'A Midsummer Night's Dream

In May 2006, Collaborative Arts produced Charlotte's first outdoor Shakespeare in fifteen years.

The two-week run was presented at The Green, a public park located in uptown Charlotte. Admission was free.

Midsummer was seen by over 2000 people, and received critical acclaim. The Charlotte Observer called it the 'kind of earth-shaking cultural debut that hits a city maybe once in a decade."

Here are reviews from the Charlotte Observer and Creative Loafing.

About the Show

The course of true love never does run smooth when Collaborative Arts presents this well-loved Shakespearean romantic comedy. A Midsummer Night’s Dream depicts four young lovers and a group of bumbling, amateur actors who journey through a moonlit forest and stumble into the fairies who inhabit it. The play explores the fickle nature of love as well as the magic and absurdity of dreams.

The show is directed by Elise Wilkinson and features Charlotte actors Jonavan Adams, Ken Akers, James Cartee, Joe Copley, Matt Cosper, Corlis Hayes, Tracy Heberlig, Kristin Jones, Karen Lamb, Joanna Long, Robby Lutfy, Christian Michelsen, Leah Webb, Beth Yost and Jim Yost. Joe Copley is assistant director.

About the Workshops

Collaborative Arts will offer free educational Shakespeare workshops for teenagers each weekend of the run at The Green. These workshops, led by local actor Jocelyn Rose, will focus on “playing Shakespeare” and will consist of fun, energetic and interactive games and exercises providing insights into the text of the play. No prior experience or training is necessary. A workshop for teens ages 12 to 15 will be presented on both Saturdays from 11am to 1pm. Teens ages 16 to 19 may attend a workshop on either Sunday from 5pm to 7pm. Workshops are limited to 30 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Inclement Weather Policy

In the event of inclement weather (strong rain or lightning) prior to the start of a performance, the curtain will be held for up to 30 minutes in the hopes that the weather will clear. In the event of inclement weather at the start of a workshop, the workshop will be cancelled or rescheduled at the discretion of the workshop leader. Patrons may call 704-625-1288 the day of the show for weather-related updates.
