This summer you heard us say "all the world's a stage" when we brought free, outdoor Shakespeare to The Green uptown... and now we are doing it again! But this time, the stage can be in your living room.
This fall, Collaborative Arts will produce the regional premiere of The Sublet Experiment, by Ethan Youngerman. This romantic comedy takes place in an apartment and we want to bring the audience where the action is -- to real apartments and condos all over Charlotte.
In the play, Eric places an ad looking for a roommate and Melanie responds. We soon learn that Eric is not exactly who he seems to be -- and neither is Melanie. The ensuing twists and turns offer a hilarious glimpse into our ongoing search for identity -- and love.
The Sublet Experiment offers a unique experience for the audience, seated right in the apartment where the action takes place. Each week offers a new venue, and a unique relationship between the actors, the space and the audience. Those who provide the apartments get the ultimate theatre experience delivered right their homes, for free! And their friends and family get first dibs on tickets!
If you have an apartment or condo in Charlotte and would like to participate, or if you know someone else who might like to, here's more information:
- The production will take place over four weeks in October and November (exact dates will be determined by the availability of the apartments/performance space)
- Ideally, each week of the run will feature a different apartment and each apartment will host four performances: Thursday through Saturday at 8:00pm, and Sunday at 7:00pm. The show runs about 90 minutes, so we'll be out of your hair by about 10:00pm (9:00 on Sunday).
- We are looking for apartments or condos that can safely accommodate at least 20 audience members in the main living area
- We will carry liability insurance: no risk to you, your apartment, or its contents
- The action will take place in the main living area and kitchen - no need to tidy up your bedroom
- We'll leave your place in at least as good a shape as we found it
- We'll provide seating for the audience as necessary
- Your address won't be on any printed materials. Only ticket holders will know the location, and no earlier than the week of the show
- You will be provided with some complimentary tickets for friends and family to see the show
You can help us continue to produce the most innovative theatre in Charlotte. The Sublet Experiment became a runaway hit in New York. Why should they have all the fun? Turn your apartment into a stage this fall!
